St. Cloud ALC PLADO Program (Personalized Learning and Development Opportunities) ALC McKinley Building 216 8th Ave N. Waite Park MN 56387 PROGRAM MISSION: The ALC PLADO Lab located at the Area Learning Center West, is a technology based learning center designed to provide an alternative educational program that is supportive and goal oriented. Students are given the opportunity to make academic progress consistent with individual achievement levels in an environment that is safe and caring. Success for students in academic, social and life goals will involve family, school and community support. BELIEF STATEMENTS: * Individual student's needs vary greatly * Students have different learning styles * Some students need flexible scheduling * Students need to learn to make choices for themselves * Learning is life-long * Instruction needs to be individualized * Time is a resource we provide * Staff/student relations are pivotal to (student) success * Personal/family issues may be barriers to learning ENTRANCE CRITERIA: Students need to qualify under learner eligibility for state designated area learning centers and alternative programs. Students must be 16 years old and referred to the program by a school counselor. Priority for acceptance to the program is based on the following categories: 1. Expelled Students 2. Students in transition from treatment/hospital 2. Students dropped from ALC programs 4. Students as approved by ALC/Building Placement Units Students must agree to: * attend daily * respect themselves, others and resources around them * think and express their thoughts * set goals * cooperate and resolve differences * lead a healthy life style * accept their parent’s involvement in their education REFERRAL/ENROLLMENT PROCESS: PLADO as an alternative program: High school counselors (BPU’S) complete standard ALC referral materials. The student enrolls in the PLADO lab for an extended time. Students will be expected to be in the Work Experience Program. DESCRIPTION OF ACADEMIC PROGRAM: The PLADO lab program uses Plato software and a wide variety of other resources and small group classes to offer curriculum in language arts, mathematics, science, social studies, work experience, creative arts and physical education is offered. A work experience coordinator will assist students with on-the-job training experiences. A service learning component is also available. Monday – Friday: 8:30-10:30 10:30–12:30 12:30–1:30 DESCRIPTION OF PERSONAL SUPPORT SERVICES: A counselor will provide a variety of services for PLADO lab students. Conflict resolution curriculum, counseling, and chemical health services will be available in addition to individual and small group support. EXIT CRITERIA: As an alternative program for a PLADO student, the length of stay will be based on individual credit needs. Requirements to remain an alternative student include demonstrating a positive attitude, maintaining regular attendance, and progressing at individual achievement level. plado Revised: 10/04/10
